Italic strategies are a serie of one hundred and four mysterious sentences about type design, that aim to free, unblock and shift the way we think about writing possibilities, and allow us to bypass normative process. Inspired by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt’s Oblique strategies — each proposal plays on the confrontation between an abstract statement about typography, reader’s type knowledge and the need for the receiver to create a mental image of it.
For example, try to imagine what « A font in case of emergency » 249 might look like. What would be a typeface that we can’t use, except in extreme circumstances? What force majeure might require a typeface, and how would this influence its conception ? Does an emergency mean the need for protection? How could small ink letters protect anyone? Did they scare the one who read them ? But... A font in case of emergency, could also speak about the very last font, the one that remains when all the others have disappeared and we have no choice but to use it. What will look like the last typeface that humanity will ever produce ?
The resulting solutions of those strange commands, unique to each person, allow us to reconsider past projects, reflect on current work, or imagine future creations. Beyond a reflexive experience, they allow an exploratory design practice, answering invented questions without applications. Each page of this notebook leaves a blank page as a call for your own answers.
